AN ANALYSIS ON THE DIFFERERENCES OF DOMESTIC TOURIST EXPENDITURE AT TOURIST DESTINATION——A Case Study of Xi'an in Golden Week

Abstract:Tourist expenditure is referred to the tourists' spend in the entire amount in a travel. Tourist expenditure is composed of three elements: expenditure in generating areas, expenditure along the journey and expenditure at the destination. The destination expenditure means the tourists' spend combined in the tourist destination, including accommodation, catering, sightseeing, entertainment, shopping, local transportation, communication and other aspects of the cost. Tourists' expenditure structure and expenditure level at the destination can objectively reflect both the rationality of the structure of tourism industry and the development level of the industry.
In order to objectively reveal the rationality of tourism industrial structure, and provide a scientific basis of readjusting the Xi'an tourism industrial structure, this paper studied the domestic tourists in Xi'an and made quantitative research on the structure of domestic tourist spending in Xi'an. Selecting domestic tourists of Xi'an area as study object, the author made a random sampling survey in typical scenic areas, hotels, and the port of Xi'an respectively in "May 1st, 2006 Golden Week". On the basis of compiling the primary data, the author chose eight indicators which were able to reflect the spending level and spending structure of tourist destinations, including total spending per capita in tourist destinations, accommodation spending per capita, sightseeing spending per capita, restaurant spending per capita, entertainment spending per capita, shopping spending per capita, local traffic spending per capita and communications spending per capita. They reflected the domestic tourists consumption structure and the level of difference in Xi'an. The author divided domestic tourists in Xi'an into three consumer groups, which are high expenditure group, medium expenditure group and low expenditure group, and found out: 1)Xi'an area mainly attracts sightseeing tourists with low-consumption, tourist consumption mainly concentrates on the basic consumption of tourism (food, accommodation, transportation, travel); 2)the main factors that influence domestic tourists' expenditure level are time for stay, tourist motivation, the number of tourist destinations and the like; 3)the fundamental methods of improving domestic tourists' expenditure level are to adjust tourist spending structure and raise tourist spending level of domestic tourists in Xi'an.
